Classmate History in alphabetical order of HS Last Name (Married Name)

Ansley, Carol
After graduating, I attended Jacksonville University and earned a degree in Health & PE, and came back to teach (primarily to coach gymnastics at the request of Lu Norwood) for 1 year. By then my interest and adrenalin junkie personality had me leaning towards Emergency Medicine. I attended Emory and graduated with a BSN in 1979. I just recently retired from 42+ years as ER and critical care nurse. During all of this, I have been married and divorced twice 🙁 but have 2 grown awesome kids, and 4 grandkids! We all live in Colorado, myself being in Colorado springs, having just moved back from Texas to be closer to the grandkids. I lived my dream of having horses and being a “cowgirl” in both Colorado and Texas. I am sans any horses now and miss them terribly – but they can be a lot of work which gets harder as we get older. My recreation now is enjoying activities in which my grands participate, golf, and being outside in beautiful Colorado. Btw – I have plenty of room for visitors! 😉 Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Apple, David
My wife Carol Fulton (BHS ’77) and I have lived in Cartersville since 2000. All 4 of our children graduated from Cartersville HS. Carol retired from Cartersville Schools after 20 years as school counselor (Her 2nd career after raising 4 kids. Her careers were much more accomplished than mine.) I also served 8 years on the Cartersville School Board. We are pretty much Purple Hurricanes. One of my other identities is Georgia Tech. I’m BIE ’76. Two of my boys are Tech alum (BArch ’05 & BME ’13) who both married Tech alums. (Carolyn Crawley Phillips, there are a lot more women at Tech these days than when you, I and 25+ LHS classmates went to Tech. It’s pretty diverse now, and most of us couldn’t get admitted today.) My father was an engineering professor at Tech, my brother and father-in-law are Tech alum. To top that off, I’ve worked for Tech for 20 years. Prior, I worked for several manufacturing companies in various capacities. I’ve lived in Kingsport TN, Newnan, NOLA, Lawrenceville, Findlay OH –11 years with Cummins Engine, and finally Cartersville. I really admire those of you who completed nursing careers because my daughter (Samford’11) is a nurse at Emory Midtown. I became a big Gator fan, my 3rd identity, when my non-Tech alum son (KSU-08) worked for UF AA and was part of national championships in football and baseball. Go Gators! My primary identity is follower of Jesus. That began summer of ’71 (I hope you noticed during our Sr year). Fort-one years of marriage, raising 4 children, coaching, refereeing and watching more soccer games than I can count, plus Carol and I having 5 grandchildren with 2 more due by year’s end, provides such a broader perspective on life than I had when I was seventeen. And I’ve lost 2 younger brothers-in-law recently, one to leukemia/covid and one to pancreatic cancer. I’ve learned that “It’s not about me”. As Pogo said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” I just try to live by St. Paul’s words, “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another just as God in Christ has forgiven you.” Wishing you all love, joy, faith and hope.

Baker (Lewis), Joy
After graduating from Lakeside, one year early, I attended Dekalb College and eventually went to work in the electronic industry at Intelligent Systems Corp. in Norcross, Georgia. It was an exciting time in electronics and our competitor was a little known company called Apple. During this time I went with a friend on a wine tasting tour of Europe in 1978 and in Heidelberg, Germany met the love of my life, Brad Lewis. Brad was working for ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in Florida and was on the same tour for his job and we began a long distance romance. Those were years of scuba diving the local islands and enjoying the Florida beaches and Florida football games in Gainesville. After a couple of years we got married and settled in Longwood, Florida where ABC had their corporate office in Orlando. There, I worked in the electronic industry again, first at Hallmark Electronics and later at Future Electronics. Brad and I were fortunate enough to visit many famous wineries and places around the world in the those years including France, Germany, England, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia and Hawaii. We have two sons, one in Brooklyn, NY and one in Lawrenceville, Georgia and have wonderful daughters in-law and three grand children under eight. We settled in North Georgia in Clayton, Georgia where I inherited acreage from my parents about 10 years ago. Brad and I have been married 42 years. Brad continues in the wine industry with his company Brad Lewis’ Wine Barrique and I am enjoying making jewelry and art that I sell on line, at local markets and a local store. We look forward to doing some more traveling soon!

Barnett (Shealy), Kim
Dual sport scholar at Dekalb College and graduated with an AA in Recreation Supervision. Deciding work was not in my near future, I continued my education at Georgia State University with a BS in Recreation Administration and a M.Ed in Physical Education. Began my career with Reliance Electric Company development team for the Vogel Power Plant, 2 years and out to my first love… Recreation. Proudest career moment: establishing an all volunteer core that completed 1 million hours of work in a calendar year and a voluntold core that completed 100,000 hours of service in a calendar year. I retired from Gwinnett County in 2019. Family: Married, two daughters and 4 grandchildren. Proudest personal moment: 2 married and successful daughters with 4 outstanding grands. Currently: My time is spent on the road with grands competing and enjoying life!

Benson (Hudson), Jill
I did not actually graduate from Lakeside, tho I really wish I had. I didn’t return for senior year when my dad got sick and passed; I went to work to help pay bills. Short life story, divorced 3 times, now living quietly in Acworth in a home I bought in ’94. I did go on to get my GED and Adult Accredited diplomas before joining the Navy. Blew out my knee before basic so switched to college in Florida, one credit short of AA due to divorce and moving back home. Had a varied work life from management to retail to hospitality. Now spend my days with my fur babies watching the wildlife from my porch rocker. It’s very sad to see what has happened to our beautiful school now. All I can say is “Go Vikings”.

Brickell, Bill
After graduation, I attended Georgia Southern in the “Boro” earning my BBA degree in Marketing. I floundered a bit but soon accepted a sales position with Xerox and went on to a successful career selling Neurologial and Polysomnography capital equipment for Nihon Kohden, America. I married the love of my life, the beautiful and most caring person ever, Cyndi Cooper Brickell. Together, we made a wonderful life in Charleston, SC. My love for the coastal life earned me the nickname, “Mr Shrimp”. (https://www.postandcourier.com/news/the-baiting-game/article_69695ba7-2128-5c1e-bb08-b9922a62bdd3.html) We built a second home in North Georgia to escape hurricanes, threats, and to enjoy all that was offered. So now we are in Clayton Georgia building our forever home in Clarkesville Georgia. If our furniture and belongings survive the 3 years in Pods, we should be settled in early 2023.

Brock (Rutledge), Robin
After graduation, I completed only one semester at Clemson University and then transferred to the business school at Georgia State University. After two years I married, and we moved to San Antonio, TX for a couple of years, and then to Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. After two children and working part time as a bookkeeper, I finally graduated from University of MD’s night school and passed the CPA exam. Using my bookkeeping and software skills, I started my own business training bookkeepers and working with small businesses. In 2008, as empty nesters and growing tired of the DC area “rat race”, we decided to semi-retire. So, we got a black lab and moved to a lake community just north of Charlotte, NC. Now fully retired, my husband and I enjoy keeping up with our four grandchildren, boating, giving back to the community, book group, gardening, hiking, going to the beach and Atlanta Braves baseball.

Butler, Mark
I got my BA in English from Emory. I started at the law library after two years of fruitless grad school at UC Berkeley, because I needed a job! When I went to law school it was with the idea that I would also go to library school and be a law librarian. I had little interest in practice. At law school I got interested in criminal appellate litigation, and that led to the career in the appellate courts. The only real-world litigation I have done was writing briefs for a summer job with the appellate public defender in Springfield, Illinois. Other than that I was always a bureaucrat. My wife was a real litigator, in private practice for a firm in DC, and then with the DC bar counsel — she prosecuted bad lawyers, of whom there are many! We both are avid birders with her interest in tropical birds jump started in Costa Rica before we met. We really got the bug in Ecuador, especially at a lodge in the Ecuadoran Amazon. So much diversity in that region. At the time, our gear consisted of one pair of 8x pocket binoculars. We have more now, especially as she loves photography! We usually go to Chincoteague, Va., for our anniversary in May, so we see lots of the same shorebirds as on the Carolina coast. Same with the Texas coast, where we have been several times in winter. We have been three times to Guyana, and it is cool to see many of our American birds like Orioles that winter down there.

Campbell, Colleen
Immediately after graduation from LHS, I tried out UGA. Probably the shortest tenure of all of my classmates; One Quarter!!!! My best friend from LHS, Sandi Smith, was going to Ga Tech and I started hanging out with her and her friends. The next fall, GT was playing UGA in Athens. We drove up to the game and tailgated and watched the game in the rain on the “railroad tracks. “One of my new GT friends asked me who I was pulling for, since I had a brief connection with UGA. ” They immediately told me’ ” you want a ride back to Atlanta, you will be rooting for GT!!!” Since that day, I have been a loyal GT Fan, even have season tickets. Career: In January 1973, I started working at Aetna in the Group Insurance Department now known as National Accounts. Got my AA from Dekalb College in Marketing while working full time and moved up the ranks at Aetna. Finally after 32 years, I retired as a National Accounts Executive in 2005 at the early age of 50. Got bored and came out of retirement in 2010 and worked for Cigna. Retired from them after five years. Love to play tennis and attempting to play golf. Family: Have enough nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews (16) to field my own basketball team with a loaded bench! Proud momma of my adorable six year old Boston Terrier, Louie.

Clarke, Matt
My goal was to fly jets in the Navy, become a commercial airline pilot, and retire early. I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1976, but was deemed NPQ (not physically qualified) for flight duty. I served aboard two ships on the West Coast before leaving the Navy in 1982 and remained in the San Francisco Bay area. I taught junior high math and high school science at a Christian school for two years. Then I returned to the Navy as a civilian for 13 years, worked as a production engineer at a food machinery company three years, and at a precision machine shop for three years. For the past 18 years, I have worked at our local Caterpillar dealership as a project engineer. I missed all three post-high school goals! The biggest event in my life was no doubt 41 years ago when I met the Lord Jesus and He radically changed my life. No room here to write how — ask me if you want to know!

Collum, Owen
After Lakeside, I spent 1 year at Auburn University as a business major, where the only notable thing I remember learning was how to fly a plane. My main interest has always been in broadcasting, so my best college years were at Georgia State University, working as DJ and Promotions Director at WRAS, one of the top college radio stations in the country. A counselor at GSU told me that a new cable channel, Cable News Network, was just starting up and they were begging for workers, so I started in their entry-level position as a “Video Journalist.” That led me to five years as a videotape editor and field audio technician, which gave me the opportunity to go to New York to help cover the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration in 1986. After CNN, I worked for 19 years at Video Tape Associates, a video post-production facility, supervising duplication and quality control of all Turner Entertainment Company movies and TV shows done at the facility, but due to advances in personal technology, many such facilities were hurting and VTA eventually had to shut down. I started over at Georgia Public Broadcasting as a production assistant for their “Lawmakers” program, working downtown at and near the State Capitol. The producer of the show recommended me for the position of master control operator for GPB’s four channels, and when that position was outsourced to Encompass Digital Media, I transferred there to work and have remained for the last ten years as broadcast coordinator for several other cable networks. I’ve remained single, so my work is my life, and haven’t given much thought to retiring just yet.

Cook, Stuckey
After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1976 with a Degree in Applied Biology, I bumped around Tech’s graduate halls and eventually took a position as environmental scientist for an international consulting firm headquartered in Columbia, SC. There I lost the childhood nickname to formal correspondence and professional duties and assumed my given name, Jack, for the remainder of my career. My work took me to southern Sudan where I subsequently met my wife of 38 years, Linda, who was handling international billing for the firm. While at Wilbur Smith Associates I acquired specialized experience in the engineering of storm water handling facilities and river hydraulic modeling. I owe this opportunity to my father who insisted I take a course in computer programming during my final year at Georgia Tech that I successfully leveraged over the next 35 years. I earned a BS Engineering from U of SC in 1985. Following that, the owner of a small firm, Haestad Methods, specializing in civil engineering computer software, fooled me into taking a key position in CT. We raised our daughter, Margaret, in CT while I advanced in a nominally successful career. (David McHenry is Godfather to our daughter). Unlike me, our daughter elected to keep her nickname, ‘Murphi,’ professionally. She is highly educated as a writer and is a champion of childhood literacy. We are extremely proud. I golden parachuted out of my career in 2015, 11 years after acquisition by Bentley Systems, a major developer of engineering, construction, and operation of civil architectural projects. I retired as VP, after several intense years of international travel, convention presentations, and PowerPoint hell. Linda and I currently reside on a corner of Linda’s family land in Williamsburg County, SC. I enjoy hunting and stay busy in my machine shop which is fully tooled up (and federally licensed) for gunsmithing.

Cox, Conde
I went to college (SMU) and law school (UT) in Texas, practiced law in Austin for 20 years, all the while writing the wine column for the Austin newspaper and playing golf at Austin Country Club. We moved to Oregon in 2001, where I have practiced law for another twenty years, where I am the President of the Federal Bar Association, and where I have been the wine critic and wine columnist for several west coast magazines including Portland Monthly and Seattle Met. Trish (my wife of 38 years) and I now live halfway between San Francisco and Portland, in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon, in the small town of Ashland, 14 miles from the California border, where the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is located and where the hiking, biking, skiing, rafting and fishing are par excellence.

Crawley (Phillips), Carolyn
Education: Graduated Ga Tech in 1975 while working PT and FT, when women were a scarce campus commodity. Adventure: Evacuated from Tehran, Iran in 1978; husband (Mike Phillips) worked for Ross Perot/EDS. If you’ve read On Wings of Eagles by Ken Follet, you know all about the trials & tribulations of that time period. Highlights: Married for 46 years with 2 great kids, 4 fun grandkids. Thriving on challenges and hard work, I started a software consulting corporation in 1996. Now: Retired early in 2007 and waited for husband to retire so we could take those long trips! The world is our travel oyster! Where have you been?

Culberson, Jeff
Upon gaining my scheduled release from that building on Briarcliff, I received a very nice invitation to be a member of the Clemson University Track and Cross-Country teams. A couple of memorable years later it made sense to join the fraternity ranks at Ga. Tech with some of my old Lakeside buddies. Following the completion of a degree in 1976, I enjoyed a colorful quarter century in the securities business that was succeeded by a satisfying decade of executive tax placement. Somewhere along the way I reconnected with the love of my life, Dottie Eberhart, who had held a place in my heart since Sagamore’s opening day in 1961.  Our great adventure together has been recently highlighted by two precious grandkids that we’re able to chase around every day.  I manage to get in a couple of hundred sets of competitive tennis annually and so far, I have been able to (slowly) jog 1000 miles each of the last few years, many of which are around the oval behind that same building on Briarcliff.

Darragh, Tim
Hi! Tim here. Although due to an injury I will not be at the reunion as originally planned, I wanted to recap my life over the past 50 years. After amassing only 1.5 years of credits from Georgia State over a 4 year period, I joined the Air Force, obtaining an Associate Degree from the Community College of the Air Force by 1980, and was honorably discharged. I have been a Communications/Navigation System Specialist on A10, F4, and F5 aircraft. After a short time in Atlanta, I picked up and moved to Boulder Colorado, and worked as an electronics technician while putting myself through the University of Colorado on the GI Bill, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree at the end of 1984. Coming back East, by way of FL, AL, and NH, I ended up back in Atlanta in time to see many of you at the 15th reunion in 1987. By 1989, my job and the lease on my apartment ended simultaneously. I moved in with my Dad in the summer of 1989 in Maryland which proved to be a life changing decision. After becoming clean and sober a couple of months before, I met Dawn Brittingham (July 1989) at a party neither of us really wanted to attend. We were engaged in December, married in February 1990, and our son Chris was born in May 1991. Fast forward to the present, my wife and I have been married for 32 years, our son married a wonderful girl, Francesca (Frankie) 3 years ago. Dawn is retired, and I am hanging on to my state job of 17 years (accounting) for another couple of years. Our son has a great job with Deloitte, and our daughter in law is in a very successful business with her mother in their film business. We live about 20 minutes from them (they are in Baltimore) in a town called Pasadena about halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis. I will work a couple of more years when my wife and I plan on a trip to Hawaii (the last of the 50 states to which I have never been) for my 70th birthday and to celebrate me finally retiring. Wish we could be there, but health comes first. Go Vikings!

I was really in Class of ’73, but graduated with you guys, so thanks for including me!

deVarennes, Chuck
After high school I attended the University of GA. After many adventures good and bad (the bad being the result of my own choices), I took a job on a gas pipeline surveying crew. This took me to various places including Lynchburg VA, where I met my first wife. Sara was born in 1980. Fortunately she was born about nine months after I got sober. I am grateful that I have remained so and that she did not have to experience me as a drunk. Eventually we settled in Atlanta for a number of years, so Sara grew up there. After the end of my marriage, I found my way into a music and art scene, where I met some incredibly talented and creative people. I wrote poetry and performed spoken word for several years, making some great friends along the way. I was cofounder and coeditor of a short lived magazine called Lonesome Virgin, which featured poetry and articles about the cafe scene in Atlanta. I was greatly blessed to meet Pat, the most amazing person I have ever known. I worked by now in the commercial construction industry, eventually traveling to many places around the country on building projects. I had a career as a construction superintendent for decades. In my time I have worked in Oklahoma, Iowa, Texas, Missouri, Florida, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Georgia, California, and South Carolina. Today we live in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where I am an inspector for city owned projects. I still write poetry, and have had a bit published in periodicals and anthologies. Over the years I came to realized how blessed I was to receive the education provided at Lakeside. The experienced has served me well.
Between Pat’s kids and mine we have six grandchildren ranging from 21-6, and we love them all. I have been the beneficiary of great kindness over the years, and I am grateful to so many good people I have be honored to know.

DeWald, Jon

I have served as an instructor for medical students from UNC-Chapel Hill. I have cut back my practice due to debilitating arthritis, recurrent failed knee replacements and ultimately an amputation of one leg. I met and married Katharina Schneider MSN, FNP while in Augusta. We have 2 sons [U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corp] and 4 grandchildren. In retirement I am working on my photography as limited by arthritis in the hands.. My Facebook site is public… for now. There are hundreds of photos to get caught up on and many to be posted on FB. Perhaps I’ll see some more of my old Lakeside classmates on Facebook..

Embry, Mark
After graduation, I Vacationed at Disney World as my last time of freedom. Then, I went to Basic training in San Antonio, TX. I transferred to Wichita, TX for my Medical Technician training. I came home and started my pre- pharmacy schooling at DeKalb Community College. Then, after going non stop, I entered Pharmacy School at the tender age of 18. Unfortunately, I wasn’t prepared to handle the intense studying and I had to quit after a year. I returned to DeKalb Tech to try and get a degree in Chemical Technology so that I could return to pharmacy school, but, once again, I was impatient and skipped to the 2nd year of the program. I would have graduated under the program, but, DeKalb College wouldn’t let me transfer my credits. So, I started working at DeKalb Medical in 76 and worked as a pharmacy tech for 40+ years. At least, I married a Pharmacist (Melinda) in 85,but, I didn’t meet her at the hospital (She was a blind date set up by my dad and her aunt). My hobbies are: Gardening, photography, cooking, eating fine food, writing and playing music (I wrote a piece for Melinda for our wedding), and traveling.

Forbes (Carlton), Vicki
After LHS I attended GA Southern for a year before returning to Decatur and going to work at Dekalb Tennis Center for a year. While working that summer lifeguarding and teaching tennis lessons, I met someone who assisted me in getting a job in banking where I worked my way up to Branch Bank Manager before leaving that role to become a Commercial Loan Assistant. Banking led me to meet my husband Richard and we married in 1981 and celebrated 41 years together in May. My husband’s job took us to Augusta Ga where we lived for 5 years before returning to the Atlanta area. In 1991 we went to Paraguay where we adopted our son Matthew who is now 31 years old. I retired from banking after 46 years at the end of 2020. We live in Canton with our miniature schnauzer Stella. My husband and I are long time season ticket holders for Ga Tech football and enjoy traveling to away games during the fall as well. I enjoy playing golf, shooting clays, and biking. My husband plans to retire at the end of 2023 and we plan to retire to Maine in the next few years.

Gunter, Bruce
Two biological children, two step-kids, two grandkids, a marriage to Angie Patterson, and a comfortable home in intown Atlanta highlight the past thirty years. A career developing (mostly) affordable housing provided plenty of meaningful work, and commitments to my church, various civic organizations, and assorted adventures taught, entertained and satisfied me immensely. And ask me about my journeys on two-wheels with David McHenry, Harvey Meisner, and David Scott!

Hagedorn, Dan “Luger”
Picking up after graduation, I went off to college. I tore my left knee out while playing football and left school. I eventually began night school while working at Neiman-Marcus in Atlanta and ended up going to UGA and getting a degree in Geology. I spent a couple of years working as a well log engineer in Texas but wanted more, so I went to SMU in Dallas for a MS in Geophysics. I then worked for Standard Oil as a seismologist until BP purchased the company. I ended up as a seismologist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA. I had a most enjoyable career at PNNL in the National Security directorate doing seismology, statistics and IT. I retired after 34 years there. I met my wife here in WA state and she and I have enjoyed riding around the country and attending M/C events on my motorcycles or in our RV. “Luger” is my road name in the M/C world!

We have 2 beautiful children: a girl and a boy. They are 33 and 35, married and living in Atlanta. My best accomplishment for sure. Currently living in Brookhaven. Own rental property there and in Fort Walton Beach, FL. I have had a happy life, experienced many things. Most I cannot mention on a public forum ;). Looking forward to many more years!

Hunt (Tacy), Betty
After Lakeside, I attended Oxford College of Emory U. I’m so grateful that Lawson nudged me in that direction. It was a great two years. I then completed my B.A. at Emory’s main campus followed by a Masters in the Dept. of Communicative Disorders. For the next ten years, I worked at two wonderful private schools in north Atlanta. During that time, I met and married my husband, Ned. In 1987, I relocated to Birmingham where I continued working in the field of learning disabilities. I started motherhood later than most, age 38, so I decided to step away from working full-time at 40. At 41 I had my second daughter, a pleasant surprise, and thoroughly enjoyed raising my girls for the next twenty years. In the summer of 2001, we moved back to GA and settled in Fayette county. Ned still works full-time for Tacy Medical, a business he and his family started over 40 years ago. Our spare time is filled with family, which now includes my adorable grandson, church activities, friends, and travel, most recently to weddings held all over the country. It’s been a good 50 years!

Jackson, Glenn

Retired from teaching to start Grapes and Ladders Vineyards and Winery.

Kilpatrick, Vann
I retired after 35 years as a Logistician, which included GM of Distribution, Union Contract Negotiator and Corp recruiter. While employed I started an OutReach Program where we hired Citizens with Disabilities. The concept spread to 7 other Corporations. Traveled extensively and now just relish the quiet life!!

King, Donald
After somehow someway graduating from the esteemed Lakeside. I attended that bastion of higher education Dekalb Community College. I only chose DeKalb because Wharton turned me away. Even though I wasn’t qualified to attend Wharton and barely qualified to get out of Lakeside, I was heartbroken when Wharton turned me down. So here I was at DeKalb, flopping around like a fish out of water. I spent more time at the arcade than going to classes. Stayed there a year, transferred to Georgia State. Results were similar., only the arcade changed from North DeKalb Mall to Northlake. I guess I considered that a upgrade. Eventually, Georgia State got tired of taking my parents money without getting much back in return and gave me a diploma. Now here’s the exciting part. My dad was in the grocery business and got me a job with a manufacturer of pasta. I was to visit stores across the state, check for distribution and sell some product. After a few years. that bubble burst. Next stop, Ralston Purina. They manufacture pet food and cereal. Times were great, I was making $24k annually and had my own apartment! At some point in time, I had a condo in Norcross. Another bubble pops and life becomes a blur. Worked at the grocery store, worked for Delta and Nabisco. Now, I sell/deliver those tasty morsels of sugar, flour. water and riboflavin otherwise known as Little Debbie snack cakes. I work in South DeKalb county and if it weren’t for the homeless, alcoholics and ladies of the evening, the job would be extremely boring. I’ve never been married. I wonder why?

Life is good. Roof over my head, food in the fridge and transportation Met boatloads of people from all over the world and enjoy hearing their stories. Great friends also selling Little Debbie. It could be worse. If it was easy, anybody could have done it. I chose a different road. In addition, I’ve opened two different retail businesses. In 1992, I opened a record store in Lilburn. It closed in 1994. In, 2014 I opened a franchised martial arts academy in Roswell. It closed in 2016. Lost a good deal of money in the second fiasco. Prior to the martial arts academy, I operated a Snyder’s/Lance potato chip route. The route was very good, but corporate management turned me off. I reside in Decatur.

Kitchens (Miller), Marianne
I graduated from the Arnold school of Public Health with a masters in public health in 1983. I also married my husband, who is an oncologist ,the same year. We have one child named Gabrielle. She is now 30 years old. I worked as the Director of health for a large school system for many years. I also worked as the Director of HIV in a large health department for a few years. I decided to be a mother full-time mostly after Gabrielle was born, but I did go in and do counseling with my Patients as well as a fill-in nurse at times. We built a large barn in 2013 and we have many rescued horses and other animals that keeps me extremely busy now. I am “as happy as a pig in mud.“ That is the main reason that I will be unable to go to the reunion. It’s an extremely big responsibility because I have 37 animals in my care.

Kroll, Jim
After graduating from LHS, I went to Georgia Tech on a football scholarship. I lettered three years and received a BS in Industrial Management. After graduation, my first full time job took me to Asheville, NC where I started a career in the insurance claim industry specializing in first party property claims and arson investigations. I managed catastrophe offices after the aftermaths of hurricanes Hugo, Andrew, Opal, Katrina and Wilma. I retired in January of 2017 after 41 years in the industry. I enjoy playing golf and spending time with my wife Linda, daughter Amanda and her husband Emory and grandsons Parker and Max. Life is Good!

Lewis, Sam
Finished LHS in March 1972 and started working for Southern Bell. Graduated from Georgia State in 1976, while working PT and FT. After 33 years, I retired from BellSouth in 2006 while living in Charleston, SC. I went to work at a local funeral home, had a painting business and returned to Roswell in 2010. After nearly drinking myself to death, I began my life in sobriety on November 1, 2007. Now I am looking forward to celebrating 15 years of sobriety this year!! I am thankful to God for His many blessings in my life. Married Jeannie in Nov 1979 after meeting her at work when I transferred to Macon, GA. Have a son from 1st attempt at marriage and 2 daughters from my 2nd marriage. We are proud grandparents of 10 beautiful grandchildren between 6 months to 11 years. We have been actively involved in the Roswell UMC Sanctuary Choir for 39 cumulative years. I am retired now and enjoying golf and family time. Occasionally I do a little painting for family and friends.

Loisel (Evans), Renee
After leaving Lakeside – Majored in Early Childhood Education at Western Carolina University where I swam and was a cheerleader for football & basketball. Returning to GA, got my Masters and taught school for 28 years in Cobb county: 4 years (1st grade), 1 yr (2nd grade), and all the rest in Kindergarten! I was married for 15 years, then divorced in 1994. I raised my 3 sons from 4, 7 and 10 yrs old by myself. Ryan went to West Ga. Chris went to Univ of Ga. Tyler went to Ga. Tech. They are all happily married, have wonderful jobs and each have a son & a daughter. I am a “Meme” to 6 adorable grandchildren! We all live within 6 miles of each other, so I see them all the time. I have never remarried. I live in Acworth now with my precious 9 lb. Bichon named Maci!

Luladakes (Sisson), Aleta
Fifty years since high school, how could that be?! To summarize my life thus far, it has been about raising my family, education, and exploration. I am most grateful for my 3 children and my 5 grandkids. I have had some amazing experiences: I was part of building a house in the Smoky Mountains of NC, have had a great marriage, learned about the western US and how life is there, acquired a master’s degree and developed a counseling practice over the last 30 years specializing in trauma treatment. I’ve raised many animals and gardened extensively, raised horses, even one that was born on my farm in Montana. I brought my horses with me when I came back east to be closer to my children. After losing my husband and having no family near me in the West, my goal was to get closer to them. I searched in the southeast drawn to the milder winters but finding no suitable farm, I moved to land and a home in Vermont, March of ’21, and am getting to experience the infancy of my newest grandson, my daughter’s first baby! I am learning about a new region of the country, once again.

Manuel, John D.
I graduated from LHS in November 1972 before my 18th birthday. I was awarded an official Lakeside diploma signed by Dr. Kicklighter and by Jim Cherry. I chose the official route, not a GED. Then in January 1973, I began Mercer Univ. I earned a BS concentration in natural science, not a major; and I picked up a minor in psych. Then I spent 3 years on the advanced level at Ga State University. My work years were at 3 Atlanta hospitals on the clinical side. I had a short marriage without children. Now I live in Briarcliff Heights, in Atlanta.

McAllister (McCallum), Rebecca “Becky”
Lived in Asheville, NC for a few years where my daughter was born when I was 23. Moved back to Atlanta in 1980 and managed my mom’s Hallmark Shop at Embry Hills for about10 years. Through friendships made at the Hallmark Shop, I ultimately landed at my present position as an Executive Assistant at Brogdon Consulting, Inc., where I have worked for 25 years. My primary involvement is with The Scott Hudgens Family Foundation where I have a position on the Advisory Board. We live in Gainesville, GA now, with a log cabin on Lake Blue Ridge. I enjoy lake life with my husband and lots of travel adventures with friends and family, reading, gardening and knitting, but most especially being a mom to my daughter and “Gammie” to my adorable grandsons.

McCullough, George
After graduating LHS I attended Ga Tech for a year and then worked my way through a BA Business Degree at GA State University. While at Ga State, I married my beautiful wife, Susan (Roberts of Class of ’73) in 1976. We will celebrate 47 years together next February. We moved to Charlotte, NC in 1978 and currently live just outside Charlotte in the Village of Marvin, NC. We have three sons: Andrew (44) lives in Charlotte with 4 children; Daniel (40) lives in Sydney, AU with 2 children; Thomas (35) lives in Avondale Estates with 1 child. I run a chemical distribution and process equipment business operating throughout the Southern US.

McHenry Jr., David Christie
I tried Young Harris College (BA), Mercer University (BA) and Georgia Tech (ME). I dropped out to hitch-hike the country. I backpacked the west. I had worthy adventures. Before and after that: I had wild times at Stuckey Cook’s Pawley’s Island place with Bruce Gunter, Harvey Meisner, Steve Wilson and “Some Girls” (as the Rolling Stones called them). I went to San Francisco for a few years. I joined the Coast Guard but quickly quit. More San Francisco. Harvey Meisner and other Georgia Tech guys came out. We all lived at corner of Haight and Ashbury. It was ten years after the Summer of Love.

Then I hitched back to ATL. I liked being an assembler at a potato machine factory. I married Tori in 1983. Tori is the best of the “Some Girls”. I renovated an old house in East Lake between 1981 and 1991. In East Lake, Tori bore healthy children – son Skylar and daughter Kelly. In 1991 we became ‘Gwinnettians’. We live in Stone Mountain. A gadgeteer at heart, I found my way to engineering at the potato machine factory. I started KurlyTie Company in 1994 and sold them on QVC. My children finished college and have good careers (one scientist, one nurse practitioner). I worked as a machine design engineer. I love that. Especially fun was a Georgia Tech robotics company called CAMotion. I retired in 2019. I still design gadgets. An investor is funding construction of a new KurlyTie factory. After 27 years, I am still trying to convince the world it needs KurlyTies.

In 1999 my brother Billy became the fourth head football coach at LHS. The Vikings made a sorry showing that year, but it was a great validation for a family (mainly my dad, Dave Sr.) who never missed a LHS football game for 34 years. And don’t forget my mom Penny who directed Miss Lakeside for many years and coached a string of winners. One year in the pageant she got the football team to dress up in drag and dance and sing to “I Enjoy Being a Girl”. That might not happen today!

In 1998 a recumbent bike saved my life. I love to ride. I often ride bikes with Dave Scott, Harvey Meisner and Bruce Gunter. Tori and I also bike, hike and whitewater kayak. I have two healthy grandchildren. Granddaughter Penny, from Kelly is 5 and grandson Tristan David, from Skylar is brand new. I am forever 2 years old. I love tripping with little children.
Thanks for coming to this reunion.

McKinney (Harrison), Priscilla
I moved to Athens, Ga the summer of ‘72. I’ve been here ever since. Got my MEd and taught school for 32+ years. Have two daughters and one grandson. I love to travel. I love the beach and go every chance I get to go with my husband. I’m a breast cancer survivor. Go Dawgs!

Newman (Pate), Jill
After LHS I attended, and graduated from the University of Denver with degrees in applied psychology and advanced practice nursing. I enjoyed a 35 year career in child and adolescent mental health care, retiring in 2015. My husband and I live in Rome, Ga. We are blessed with two beautiful children, their spouses, and three grandchildren. In addition to staying busy with a variety of community and church commitments, we enjoy lake life, family beach trips, and international travel (when possible).

Perkins (Kurland), Penny
I attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting. I worked at several businesses as an Art Director and freelance Artist until I had my two sons, Ross(1985) and Jake( 1987). I married Rocky Kurland (class of 1973), in 1983. I still enjoy my Art, reading, water aerobics, gardening and traveling. We also enjoy spending time with our granddaughters.

Powell, Michael
Out of Lakeside went to Ga. Southern and flunked out after 2 years. Got married but she cheated on me in less than 8 months. Got divorced. Joined the Navy but got kicked out after 2 years. Went to San Diego State, had all my credits except for Spanish. I figured it was Miss Brady’s fault that I could not pass Spanish. Lived in San Diego for 10 years with a great girl and learned from her father how to buy houses with VA loans with little money down. Still have houses in CA. Moved back to Atlanta in 1984. Got a job in the mobile home industry, got fired. Went to work for a former friend. What a nightmare. Got married again. Eight years later quit my “job” and got divorced. Took a vacation to the Philippines for two weeks. WOW! What a vacation! Came back home a month later. Went back to the Philippines for another visit. Came back home and sold my house in Tucker; sold everything and moved to Angeles City Philippines. Joined Balibago Social Golf club and play golf several times a week. Broke 80 three times and managed 2 eagles. We live in a great neighborhood minutes from everything: Hotels, casinos, and Walking Street. By my account, I am the LUCKIEST man alive!

Price, Donna
Donna Paula Price, formerly David Paul (“little David”) Price, attended Mercer University for both undergraduate and law school, where as a student I accepted a commission as a Navy Officer, serving for 25 years on active duty in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, retiring as a Captain. During my Navy career, among many assignments, I was a Prosecutor, Defense Counsel, and Criminal Trial Judge; was responsible for all Personnel and Medical issues affecting the Department of the Navy before Congress; was Commanding Officer of the largest legal office in the Department of the Navy; to the shock of my LHS English teachers, became a respected writer; and am a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Traveling throughout the world I have overseas 3x, visited 45 nations, 48 states, 4 Canadian Provinces and 1 Canadian Territory. I earned an LLM (Master of Laws), in International and Comparative Law, with highest honors, from George Washington University; was an SVP (Privacy and Compliance) and Chief Compliance Officer for a Healthcare Provider; Corporate Counsel for a Defense Contractor; engaged in the Private Practice of Law focused on National Security issues; am an Adjunct Professor at the University of Richmond Law School; currently serve as the Chair of the Albemarle County, Virginia Board of Supervisors, the governing body of the County; and am a candidate for the Virginia General Assembly/House of Delegates where I hope to enshrine in Constitutional Amendment protections of individual liberties.

When I retire, I will travel the United States and Canada in my big-ass Ford F-250 crew cab pickup and truck camper. In 2014, I transitioned from male (David) to female (Donna) and will never give up, never surrender as I am now my truest self.

Reagin, Tom
I graduated LHS Spring ’72, attending Georgia State University (and Dekalb College in Summers) from Fall ’72 until Spring ’75. Then I attended Southern College of Optometry from Fall ’75 through Spring ’79 where I received my B.S in Biology in ’77 and my O.D. in ’79. I immediately joined my father’s optometry practice in Decatur GA and practiced for 39 years before retiring to pursue perfecting my laziness. I refereed soccer for 14 years. I am a Past Master of Pythagoras Lodge #41 of Free and Accepted Masons in Decatur and also a York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason. I am also a member of Yaraab Shrine. My wife (married October ’94) and I enjoy being homebodies and cruising. I have three wonderful children, Ed (42), Sarah (37), and Andy (26.) Reynolds, Bob
Graduated GSU BBA Risk Management. Worked for Factory Mutual in Atlanta, Charlotte and Houston. Returned to Atlanta in 1987 to join Fred S. James. Later joined Merritt and McKenzie to form a Construction Risk department. Subsequently we sold Merritt and McKenzie to First Horizon Corporation. In 2006 joined Yates Insurance agency. Married Karen Tangard from Boston MA in 1987. Two daughters, Robin 1992 and Kristina 1996. Robin graduated from Cornell and currently is working for Delta. Kristina graduated from Lakeside and Samford and is an ER Nurse for UAB Birmingham. She is planning an October Wedding. Currently we have a home in the Lakeside area and a farm in rural North GA, where I plan to retire.

Rigdon (McCullough), Sharon
Graduated from UGA, masters from North GA College, Ed Specialist from Brenau College. Currently I live in Madison, GA with my husband Jerry. We have been married for 48 years. We have four children, who with their spouses = 8 grown kids and 9 grandkids. Things can get loud when we all get together! In June of 2014 I retired from teaching 7th grade science at Morgan County Middle School. Since retiring I spend a lot of time volunteering with Friends of Hard Labor Creek State Park, Monarchs Across Georgia, and Madison Baptist Church and other local groups in the community. I also enjoy traveling with family and friends. Next big adventure is our second Viking Cruise in October.

Rogers (Valauri), Susan
A career in government relations began in Washington, DC after I graduated college (Emory). I wryly joke that an anthropology major promoted my success in politics as I had a keen understanding of primitive man. My husband Chris and I are winding down business affairs after forty years in Raleigh, NC relishing a fast-growing region full of creative young people, college sports, and a vibrant arts community. Today our mission is serving others working with non-profits focused on sustainable housing and recovery. We are blessed by a strong spiritual foundation, civic involvement, and gifts of rich, diverse experiences. I recall my years at Lakeside as anxious, awkward and inspiring. A saving grace was a group of equally awkward and anxious girlfriends who banded together forming a gang of sisters who loved one another and nurtured a sense of belonging. Embracing life with openness and curiosity was inspired by a solid public school education and really smart classmates. After decades of losing touch, the 50-year reunion offers a wonderful opportunity to trip down memory lane.

Scott (Holley), Suzanne
After graduating from LHS, I attended Clemson for 2 years, and completed my nursing education at Emory. My first husband’s work took us to Statesboro, GA and Dothan, Al. My second marriage to John, returned me to the Atlanta area (Lawrenceville) . We have 3 daughters, and one granddaughter. Poor John! I’ve done a little bit of everything in nursing, but especially loved my last job as a Direct Care Nurse in Title One schools. I am “maybe” retired, as I need to be available for my mom, who is 94 years old, but I miss my Special Ed kids terribly. I am blessed with many close LHS relationships that continue…Sam, Bruce, Sharon, and 9 of us in a Bible Study!

Shartar, Ed
We’re in Sandy Springs and thinking of retirement. The big decision is where to, as our children are in Washington, DC, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. We’re thinking of a beach destination. Any ideas? It’s been an interesting and pretty amazing 50 years…college (Emory University), graduate school (Harvard Business School), 5 children (all boys), 2 grandchildren (so far), 4 countries (US, Israel, England, Canada), 6 cities (Atlanta, New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, London, Toronto), 5 industries (government, banking, beverages, meetings and events, executive search), big companies (Citibank, The Coca-Cola Company), small companies (Experient, Acadia Associates), lots of roles. For the past 10 years, I have been in executive search in Atlanta. I enjoy it. Of all that I have done, I am most proud of my family, mentoring others, and helping nonprofits. I consider myself very fortunate.

Smiley (Pulley), Debbie
First grade was Holiday Hills (Jacksonville), Oak Grove, then finished out first grade in the new school, Sagamore Hills. Left Atlanta in 1966 to do my high school years in Hong Kong. It was a wonderful life. Moving back to Atlanta my senior year was a challenge but it worked! I still had some friends from Oak Grove Methodist and classmates from Sagamore that helped. My life seemed to always be about babies and once I was 16 (Hong Kong) I was blessed to work in Labor & Delivery and learn birthing from the midwives there. When I came back to the US I worked per diem at Crawford Long. Unfortunately Geriatrics was all that was available. That and nursing school were very short lived. I went to work for a pediatrician who taught be more detail about babies. Don and I met on the ship during the senior trip to Nassau. On St Patrick’s Day in 1973 we were married and have been together ever since. Two beautiful children, Chris (’75) and Michelle (’79) have been our pride and joy since they were born. Chris might end up being a lifetime bachelor while Michelle has been married now for 20 years. Michelle and her husband have blessed us with two wonderful grandsons, a grandaughter who was our bonus with the wedding package and has now give us a beautiful great-granddaughter. Once the kids were older I started working with the national midwifery organizations and traveling quite a bit. I eventually ended up on the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) Board. We do the national certification and state licensing boards for direct-entry midwives. When I started national work we had nine states with direct-entry midwifery licensure and we now have 38 states. Through the years of practice in GA we were able to make wonderful connections with the Department of Health and hospitals. I hold national certification as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) as well as a TN license to practice midwifery. Unfortunately the State of Georgia stopped issuing licenses in 1973 so for 40+ years and >1000 I was a public nuisance. Nothing worked to get licensure reinstated. After a little disagreement with the Secretary of State and Nursing Board, 50+ years after I started going to births, I decided to retire. My body also let me know by deciding to shut down. A few stents later I am good as new. Don and I built a house on Lake Lanier. This is definitely our happy place 🙂

Trawick, Robert
After Lakeside, I went to Davidson College, intending to major in English or humanities, but found math and physics to my liking. When I took a year off to work, I discovered my interest in computers. After graduation, I worked in the Georgia State University computer center for a year and then took a Masters in Computer Science at UNC in Chapel Hill. While there I started work in Research Triangle Park for mini-computer maker Data General (which became EMC which became Dell) and continued with them for 33 years with two stints at start-ups. I specialized in programming languages and compiler construction before going into management. Sabra Faires, an attorney from Charlotte whom I met at Davidson, married me and we built a house on a rural tract in the Triangle area. We had three sons, all of whom now work in software and IT. After retirement from EMC, I resumed my favorite work – programming – creating websites for researchers at UNC’s Lineberger cancer research center. I enjoy writing, photography, gardening, hiking, and getting away to a cabin surrounded by National Forest near Linville Gorge. We have 2 precious grandchildren who live near Boston.

Trombetta, John
I got married in 1987 to Wendy Guiles-Trombetta and we raised 4 children together in DeKalb County (living for a few years on Pangborn Circle and 20 years on Varner Drive). I worked in healthcare supply chain and operations (went to Emory undergrad and Ga State for an MBA) until I retired at the end of 2018. I was a Scout leader for 18 years (2 sons are Eagles); Wendy and I were active in church and volunteerism. We moved to Burlington MA in 2015 to be close to our daughter and 2 granddaughters who are in Cambridge (6 & 8 years old). Our 3 sons live in LA, the Sonoma area in CA, and Sarasota so 3 of 4 US corners pretty much covered. No other grandchildren yet but stay tuned. Retirement looks like typical stuff, pandemic aside — grand parenting, travel, gardening, reading, more volunteering (food pantries and food relief/rescue), a couple of quirky habits (cartooning, studying Spanish & Italian). Thank God we are all healthy. Take care, be safe, be nice, have fun at the reunion!

Tuck (Waldrop), Madeline
I went to the University of Georgia and graduated in 1976 with a BBA in Marketing and Management. In 1976 I began working in Rich’s Department Store in Corporate Personnel and left Rich’s in 2000 as Divisional Vice President of Store Expenses and Staffing. Married the PK (Preacher’s Kid) Jim Waldrop in 1978. Jim and I have remained in the LHS area for 44 years (yeah we haven’t gotten very far in life). We are very blessed with a daughter (35), son-in-law (35), granddaughter (4), and grandson (8 months) living a mile from us. Jim retired in 2017 and our greatest joy is spending time with our grandchildren and oh yes their parents. Also, I have been fortunate to have stayed close with my LHS girlfriends including several in a Bible Study Group for 17 years.

Vannah, Rob

Watson-Pippin, Susan
I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. While taking a radio-tv-film course there I discovered how much I loved radio announcing and got a shift with the student radio station in the booming time slot of Sunday mornings 6-9 (when no students are stirring). I got the experience I needed to work at a series of radio stations in Athens, Marietta, Atlanta and Cartersville after that. Eventually I moved out of the on-air rat race to work in copywriting, advertising, PR and later marketing and sales in various industries. I was married to John Pippin from Henderson High and we had boy-girl twins. That marriage unraveled and I ended up raising the twins by myself. We all lived in Duluth/Atlanta until 7 years ago when my daughter met a physicist at Ga Tech and they moved to Santa Fe, NM to work at the Los Alamos National Lab. I bought a patio home in Santa Fe (seemed like the thing to do at the time) to stay at part time and then decided to sell my home in Duluth because it was too much complication for a single woman. I had retired from AGCO Corporation in Duluth. I miss Georgia terribly and plan to return to either Georgia or Florida in the future. I spend my time traveling, making and selling my wheel thrown miniature pottery, and helping with 3 grandkids here in Santa Fe. I am looking forward to reconnecting with everyone!

Welch (Gillespie), Shannon

Son now in Catskill, another in New York & daughter (expecting 1st grandchild!) in Amsterdam. Meaningful professions followed RISD, Carnegie Mellon Masters Human Computer Interaction, SMU, W&L & Wharton MBA. Retired to Charleston 2011, on Board Gibbes Museum of Art & Nathaniel Russell House Committee. Passionate about travel… US, Africa, Russia, Gota Canal Sweden & Morocco. Was, & am fortunate to have a fine family!

Wetherington (Helton), Diana
After LHS graduation I went to Ga State University. The summer after my second year I married Jim Helton (LHS’71). I lost my beloved dad 40 days later. Jim and I lived in Married Student Housing at GaTech on 10th street until graduation (an experience). I managed to graduate with a Business Degree and most of a Geology minor (I’m still a hobby-enthusiast). The business degree took me down the road as a Senior Office Operations Manager for various large and small businesses and eventually into the computer hardware and software industry for 10 years. After that I did a few years in the paralegal field in working for a Gwinnett County judge until my retirement. In 1977 my husband and I helped plant and charter Perimeter Church in Norcross, GA (currently of John’s Creek). For the next 30 years we were highly active there in a myriad of positions including Sunday School Coordination, President of Women in the Church and Jim was both a Deacon and P-T IT Director. We both taught Sunday classes and lead small Couples groups. Starting with Worship Teams, I began to sing and perform for church and para-church productions and various group vocals. In 1997, a group of friends and I formed a singing group called Firelite…an 8-voice, multi-harmony acapella ensemble (we were a couple years ahead of the craze). For nearly 20 years we performed in various venues spanning the SE States and won several competitions. I also sang with a number of weekend groups in the Atlanta area over the years. I retired from singing about eight years ago so I could be at home with my mom and care for her until her passing. We currently live in Buford/Hall County (Yes…it exists). Now empty-nesters we have two lovely daughters, both Godly and successful women whom we love and highly respect. We are also blessed with two wonderful sons-in-law! We have five very cool, active and over-achieving grandkids ranging from 8 to 19 (Three boys and two girls) who keep us busy. Jim and I consider ourselves blessed by God far beyond measure!

1976 -1989 – Enjoyed a successful career mostly as Food & Beverage Director with Hyatt Hotels, Embassy Suites and Hilton Hotels in Atlanta, Washington DC, Baltimore, Somerset/Princeton NJ, Cincinnati, and ending back in Atlanta.

1995 – Present. Owner of The Inspector, a Home Inspection (retired) and Multi-Inspector Multifamily Residential Code Compliance Inspection Company. May fully retire in a few more years. I can’t sit around watching TV or playing on the computer, don’t have a current hobby and don’t want to be a Walmart or Costco greeter. 😉

Very happily married to my second wife and soulmate, Laurie, for 21 years. Laurie brought two great sons into our marriage that have given us the pleasure of seven grandchildren, 2 boys and 5 girls. We also have two adorable fur baby terriers that rescued us. Laurie and I live in historic Roswell in a small enclave of eleven homes near the square and love it. I had a double lung transplant two years ago in July and all is going well. We look forward to getting back to travel outside of the southeast next year. Hoping you have had a great life as well. Go LHS Vikings!

Wood (McCarty), Donna
After graduation I obtained a BA in English and a Counseling Master’s from UGA. One highlight was working as a Graduate Resident Assistant in a coed dorm when the drinking age was 18; it was crazy (think canoe races on a flooded sub-basement floor, lol). I accepted a rare open position in a college counseling center in Atlanta, got married, & began adulting in earnest. The counseling job offered a chance to teach Intro Psych. Despite a quivering voice & wobbly knees on day 1, by week 2 I was hopelessly hooked & ready to do whatever it took to become a professor. “Whatever it took” turned out to be a lot: earn a PhD, work full-time, help terminally ill parents, be a parent. Cheers for my amazing husband who made it possible! After teaching courses at CSU and GSU, a tenure-track Psychology position opened at Clayton State. I fell in love with the students, faculty, & beautiful campus. I found a passion for first generation college students from diverse backgrounds, ages, & ethnicities; I loved having my door open to students & helping them to reach their dreams; I worked with my colleagues to build a vibrant Dept of Psychology. With over 600 students & a grad program, the Dept of Psychology grew to be the largest on campus. After 40 years in the University System of Georgia (11 years as Dept Chair), I retired in 2016 to raise our infant grandson, Lucas (now 8). He is full of love – a true joy & blessing. As an Emeritus Professor I can still teach part-time in my beloved department while pursuing the joys of family-time, camping, hiking, reading, & animal companionship. As some of you know, we lost our first grandchild to SIDS & our daughter has struggled; thankfully, she has fought her way back to health & happiness.
